Practicing the craft of journalism

Today’s American Business Forum was co-chaired by Black & Veatch Chairman, President and CEO Len Rodman and by Nilaksh Kothari of the American Water Works Association. As I snapped a photo of Len and Nilaksh before the forum began, I also took a photo of his badge to be sure I got the spelling right because I’ve always had a problem with all the consonants in his name. It’s a trick I learned as a former journalist.
Then one of our student bloggers from Ng Ann Polytechnic, Leng Ji En Paul, came into the meeting room and was introduced to Len. The first thing he asked Len after posing for this photo was how to spell Len’s name. This student has good journalist instincts!

Hi Constance:
I appreciate what you are writing. Paul is a student at Ngee Ann Poly and I am just happy to see your post. I am just very happy you are encouraging him to get out of his shell. Our students don’t have the opportunity to blog on a respected site – they only started journalism class three months ago – and you have been very very encouraging. There is an OMG moment when they seen their posts published and it changes the way they see how much control over their work. It’s just amazing. It’s hard work but I think they are starting to love it.

That’s great to hear and great to see such enthusiasm at last night’s closing ceremony from your students also. We’ll keep posting their work for the next couple of weeks so tell them to keep coming and encourage their friends to read the blog / go to the Youth @ SIWW site also (I put up a link here yesterday). One question they kept asking was how do they pass on their knowledge now that they’ve become familiar with some of the issues…
Mr. Khoo was also delighted with their enthusiasm – I showed him some of the pictures of Professor Glennon being door stopped!
