A NEW Approach to Water…
I was unaware of NEWater until my arrival in Singapore, and I assume the same is true for those of you who are non-natives. So after visiting the PUB booth, I thought I’d share my newfound knowledge.

NEWater Lounge
NEWater is PUB’s name for reclaimed water. Microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet disinfection are used to reclaim wastewater. It’s the third tap in Singapore’s Four National Taps Strategy. NEWater is mainly used for non-potable applications as well as air-condition cooling towers. A small amount of NEWater gets blended into the reservoirs, where it undergoes treatment again with the raw water. NEWater currently meets 15% of the daily water demands, expected to increase to 30% by 2010. Tan Gee Paw, PUB Chairman, noted, “Recycling can increase the yield of a water supply system exponentially. If we recycle 50%, the yield is not 50% but 100%, and if we recycle 75%, the yield increases by 300%.”

Happily sipping on NEWater!
At SIWW, PUB had NEWater lounge distributing bottles to any and all. It was especially nice to spot B&V’s name on the booth’s décor! The labels are updated to commemorate national events, such as SIWW. As Constance noted earlier, while the bottles come in various bright colors, I’m extremely glad to report that the water itself is colorless, tasteless and odorless – a true feat of engineering!
